Agave utahensis seeds Utah Agave
Agave utahensis is one of the smallest of the species. A compact rosette with soft toothy spines, it's very showy. Native to the American Southwest, it grows in the most brutal conditions from scorching heat to temps below zero and is beyond drought-tolerant. It does need gritty soil with good drainage. This uncommon agave is often found growing out of rock walls.
Mature plants grow several feet wide and send up 15' stalks of yellow blooms in winter. They also form offsets around the mother plant, making a dense and impressive cluster. Utahensis grows slowly, and young plants are small enough to thrive on a sunny windowsill.
